Drugs Affecting Lab Test - 検体検査に影響のある薬 -

Dialogue

Sophie Hi, Ms. Smith! How is your magazine?
Ms. Smith : Interesting. I am really enjoying it.
Sophie:  Well, I won’t take too much of your time.  I just came by to talk about your medicine before the  medical technologist runs the laboratory tests.
Ms. Smith : Okay.
Sophie :  When were you diagnosed with a gastric ulcer?
Ms. Smith :  Two months ago.
Sophie :  What medications are you taking?
Ms. Smith :  My doctor prescribed Pantoprazole.
Sophie :  How often do you take it and what is the strength?
Ms. Smith : Once a day but I’m not sure of the strength. They’re in a blister pack.
Sophie :  You have a 40 mg delayed-release tablet.  How long have you been taking it and did you  have a refill?
Ms. Smith : If I am not mistaken, 8-weeks now with no refill yet.
Sophie :  Are you taking any other vitamins, minerals or dietary supplements?
Ms. Smith : I have ferrous sulfate for my anemia.
Sophie:  That’s it for our medication history interview. I will add all of this information to our data chart.
Ms. Smith : What about my laboratory test?
Sophie:  First, you need to discontinue taking your medicine before you undergo fecalysis  and urinalysis. These medications may interfere with the  laboratory tests and cause a false-positive occult blood reading.   This confusing interference may not only result in a wrong diagnoses but also an incorrect treatment, unnecessary tests and further costs.
Ms. Smith : And as usual I need to fast for 8 hours prior to my blood sugar test.
Sophie :  Yes, that is correct. We’ll add all of this information to your data charts.

Think about it

  1. What’s the health condition of Ms. Smith?
  2. How will Ms. Smith’s drugs affect the laboratory tests results?
  3. How do you record the patient’s medical history to make sure there is no drug affecting laboratory tests?
